A Statewide Summer Reading Program with a Twist

Libraries across the state of Maine are talking about the same two titles this summer, hand-picked by Maine mystery legend Paul Doiron. This month, we will be reading River Talk, a short story collection by Joan Agee.

What's so special about this novel? Doiron explains:
“The short stories in CB Anderson’s River Talk are about Mainers: folks you went to school with and have known forever, others you hear speaking in foreign tongues on the street, newcomers, neighbors, maybe even yourself...if you’re looking for a book about the ways people in Maine actually live, now, today, you need to read this small masterpiece.”

Copies of this book are available to check out in the Taylor building.

Description:

Poetry lovers and readers are invited to participate in a workshop designed to mold more engaging presenters at public poetry. Kimberly Cloutier Green will teach participants to be a "vessel" for poems, engaging listeners and deepening understanding through posture, pitch, tone, volume and pacing.

The Maine Poetry Express is the brainchild of former Maine Poet Laureate Wesley McNair, and connects libraries and local poets in sharing Maine's poetry with their community. The Maine State Library will provide anthologies and other resources, both historical and contemporary, for this program.

Kimberly Cloutier Green is the ninth Poet Laureate of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She has brought the joy of performing poetry to the Kittery community by coordinating the quarterly Rice Pudding Poetry series.

This event is free, but registration is required. Registrants will select poems from anthologies in the Rice Building before the workshop.

6:00 PMReadME Summer Book Club

Location:
Contact:
Description:

Our summer reading club continues with August's book, Settled in the Wild: Notes from the Edge of Town by Susan Hand Slatterly.

The titles for this year's reading challenge were selected for the Maine Humanities Council by beloved Maine mystery writer Paul Doiron. Why does he love this selection of slice-of-life essays?

"Susan Hand Shetterly’s collection of lyrical short essays, Settled in the Wild: Notes from the Edge of Town, is a book intended for all of us. It’s about watching deer drift through the field at dusk and about leaving the window open in April to hear spring arrive with the first piping of the peepers. It’s about the familiar, the secret, and the strange, written by an artist whose gift it is to help us see our shared environment as we’ve never seen it before.”

Whether you're a townie or a transplant, everyone is invited to join in! Copies are available at the Taylor desk and in ebook form on one of the library's circulating Nooks.
